Pulse of Digital Blog After the amount of breaches last year, it should come as no surprise that retailers took a financial hit. According to BI‘s analysis of a recent Lexis Nexis report, the cost of fraud rose to $32 billion in 2014. Additionally, “fraud as a percentage of retail sales increased as well, likely as a result of massive data breaches at Target, Home Depot, Nieman Marcus, and others.”

Although merchants are upgrading to EMV, BI warns that this technology will not be enough on its own to protect against fraud. Additional layers of security such as point-to-point encryption (P2PE) and tokenization are essential to reducing the instance of cyber crime.

New technology is undeniably exciting, especially when it comes to payments. In many instances, new technology can mean cost saving, more efficiency and greater convenience, but it can also result in new vulnerability. Every time a new type of payment tech is released onto the market, cyber criminals work hard to poke holes in unforeseen vulnerabilities.

ISO and Agent reports that as EMV becomes more widespread, integrated terminals will become new targets. These terminals allow for advances like Apple Pay to exist, which allows for transactions to be delivered in new, potentially vulnerable ways. The best way to protect against attacks? According to Julie Conroy of Aite Group, it’s a “three-legged stool” consisting of tokenization, point-to-point encryption, and EMV–an approach we whole-heartedly agree with.

New Years Resolutions_Header2014, the year of ice bucket challenges, Flappy Bird, and the Frozen phenomenon has come to a close and the New Year is here. Not only are there several deadlines in place for merchants this year regarding payment processing and security, but exciting new technology is beginning to separate the market. Plus, after the amount of payment cards compromised this year grew 38%, there’s never been a better time for businesses to rethink their processing and security practices.

Along with your personal resolutions this year, why not make some as a merchant? Below are our top five payments resolutions for 2015.

1. Achieve PCI-compliance–for good.

Get that credit card data out of your systems! To be truly PCI compliant, sensitive data should not be touching your workstations, and it certainly should not be stored. One of the best ways to do this is with point-to-point encryption (P2PE), a process recommended for all merchants by the PCI Council. When you accept cards using P2PE, the card data is encrypted at the point of interaction. This means that unencrypted data never touches your system, making PCI compliance a much easier task. Want to be as iron-clad as possible? Combining P2PE and tokenization is a great way to lock down your sensitive data and keep it out of the hands of cybercriminals.

Remember, the deadline for PCI 3.0 compliance was January 1st, 2015–here’s what you need to know.

2. Get EMV-ready

The EMV deadline is approaching fast, and it can never hurt to be ahead of the game. Especially since some major banks have already begun distributing chip-enabled cards. The technology was implemented in Europe over 20 years ago, and now that it’s moving to the United States, merchants are rushing to prepare. By October of this year, all merchants must be equipped with EMV-ready terminals.

While we believe EMV is a necessary and important step in the right direction, it is by no means a silver-bullet to credit card fraud. Payment security will take a lot more than a single solution to perfect, and it’s important that merchants remain vigilant in protecting their card data.

3. Stay educated

These days, the payments industry is evolving quickly along with other technology. Keeping abreast of what’s new can take a little work, but it can be worth it in the long run. For example, you’ve probably heard of Apple Pay, but do you know how it works? It’s compatible with both Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Near-Field Communications (NFC) technology, both delivering unique customer experiences. BLE allows customers to pay from anywhere within the store using their smart phone, while NFC requires being closer to the payment terminal. Combined with technology like Touch ID, it has the potential to really change the in-store shopping experience.

The best way to stay up to date on new payments technology is by reading publications like Digital Transactions and PYMNTS.com. Tradeshows like Money 20/20 are also the perfect place to learn about the latest and greatest in the payments industry.

4. Ditch flat-rate processing

Flat-rate pricing is tempting, we completely get it. It’s an easy to understand thing in a difficult to grasp industry. Payment processing is complicated, but that’s all the more reason that pricing should be more intricate.

All transactions incur three fees:

1. A fee to the issuing bank, e.g., Chase (interchange)
2. A fee to the card brand, e.g., MasterCard or Visa (assessment)
3. A fee to the credit card processor

The assessment is a fixed cost, but interchange varies greatly. Flat-rate pricing has to be such to cover for all interchange scenarios, and can cost merchants up to 20% more than they need to be paying.

Interchange-plus pricing aims to optimize costs for merchants by carefully monitoring basis points and pricing accordingly. This way, merchants are never charged more than they need to be for interchange, and it gives them more control. Learn more about interchange-plus pricing here.

5. Crack down on chargebacks

Cutting costs is always a good thing, and for the most part chargebacks (and their related fees) are an avoidable one. Chargebacks occur a few ways. One is when a customer is unhappy with a product or service and requests a refund from their bank. These chargebacks can generally be avoided with excellent customer service and good communication with customers. Another reason chargebacks occur is when customers suspect fraud. These are a bit harder to avoid, but can be well worth the effort in the long run.

Check out this guide on how to avoid all types of chargebacks, from customer dissatisfaction to fraud.

These resolutions are really just a jumping-off point—what other payments resolutions are you going to make this year? Let us know on Twitter and Facebook!

It’s no secret that mobile point of sale is big right now. It seems like everywhere you go, small businesses are outfitted with dongles fastened to tablets and smart phones. The appeal is clear. These portable, cloud-based solutions are generally attached to uncomplicated flat rate processing and the hardware comes at little or no cost to the merchant. Obviously mPOS is gaining popularity, but it’s more difficult than you might think to determine the actual rate of retail adoption. As popularity increases, providers are branching out from simple processing and focusing more on value-added services.

Many surveys currently suggest that retailer adoption of mPOS is around 40%, but as Business Insider recently pointed out, this number is likely closer to 30%. Adoption rates among retailers are lower than businesses in general for several reasons. One is that merchants without employees tend to use mobile POS systems in high numbers. These smaller vendors benefit from location flexibility, and costs are, at least upfront, generally less than legacy systems. BI’s research established that adoption rates in New York are actually lower than reported, and it’s not uncommon for small retailers to try out an mPOS system only to revert back to a legacy system. Additionally, it should be noted that retail doesn’t represent all mPOS adoption–it has also been utilized by construction, the arts, real estate, etc.

That said, mobile point of sale is still expected to reach almost 80% penetration by 2019 despite some of its criticism. It’s definitely disruptive, not to mention competitive.

Challenges for mPOS

Generally, mPOS companies target small businesses, as their systems don’t properly support the needs of larger organizations. Thus, small businesses have a higher adoption rate of mPOS than larger companies. While most businesses in the United States are considered “small businesses”, they don’t make up a large percentage of total revenue. More than half of the businesses in the US earn less than $5 million/year. 46% of businesses have zero employees, but generate just 2% of total revenue.

Why is this important? Because the majority of mPOS companies make their money from percentages of each transaction. If all of their customers are small businesses bringing in low revenue, the amount of money the company can bring in is extremely limited.

One of the main reasons mPOS was adopted so widely so quickly was that the hardware necessary to support it cost very little, so any merchant hesitant to put down the money for a legacy terminal jumped on board. Despite that fact, dongle businesses aren’t easy or cheap to run. They require a large and knowledgeable support staff. It’s for this reason that several companies have had to ditch their dongle business.

Alternative sources for revenue

In a word? Software.

mPOS provides a major service to small businesses, but as they start to evolve their needs grow. This is where inventory management software comes in, and mPOS companies are the perfect ones to provide it. Since mPOS already relies on a software component, it’s simple to tack on more complex features to offer a la carte for businesses that want to take advantage of them.

Functionality can include everything from payroll to labor management, sales analysis and reporting–even marketing efforts. With the right technology, companies with limited staff can have access to incredibly valuable data that they would have never had otherwise.

This is hardly a new concept—the transition towards more software-focused solutions has already begun. Since the mPOS boom, we have noticed our own merchants gravitating heavily toward solutions that offer options like analytics, inventory management, and apps custom-built for their type of business.

Point of sale, unplugged

One great example of a company taking full advantage of this opportunity is Instore. Their iPad point-of-sale system helps thousands of restaurants, bars, cafes, and more to accept payments smoothly. Their analytics software not only provides businesses with invaluable data, but it also allows for employee management, time keeping, and more. Merchants only need an iPad to get started—the hardware is provided free.

Another company taking mPOS by storm is Clover. Clover POS launched earlier this year with their stunning “tablet style” point-of-sale system, and recently they’ve gone fully mobile. Clover Mobile takes all the best parts of Clover POS and makes it wireless. Learn more here and sign up to be notified when Clover Mobile becomes available.

2014 has been declared the “year of the data breach”, and for good reason. We saw more large, publicly announced breaches this year than years past, and data security became a hotter topic than ever before. New technology like EMV and tokenization are getting press, and consumers are being more and more aware that they may be at risk. Check out the infographic below and learn the details of the top data breaches of the past year.
Data Breaches of 2014_branded

PF. Chang’s

Announced in June, the security breach at P.F. Chang’s impacted 33 restaurants over the course of about 8 months. It had been uncovered by the Secret Service just one day before the announcement, and over the next two months they underwent an investigation to determine the depth of the breach. Ultimately, they found that it was likely credit card data had been stolen from the 33 impacted restaurants spanning 18 states. Following the breach, P.F. Chang’s launched a security page to address questions and to keep the public updated on developments.

Sally Beauty

Cosmetics and beauty retailer, Sally Beauty, discovered in March that they had been victims of a massive hack, likely by the same group that attacked Target. Less than 25,000 records were found to have been compromised, but the retailer declined to speculate about any specifics. The stolen data included “Track 2″ data, or the information ATMs and POS systems use to authorize transactions. Other stolen data included customer names, card numbers, and CVV codes. An early report by Brian Krebs speculated that up to 282,000 records could have been compromised due to a large batch that went up for sale on the same site that sold data from the Target breach, but it was never confirmed.

USPS

While there wasn’t any evidence of fraud associated with the November breach, the data of over 800,000 USPS employees was compromised. Customers who called the customer service any time in 2014 before August 16th may have also had data compromised, but the data was limited to names, numbers, addresses, and emails.

Home Depot

In a massive breach that surpassed Target in scale, almost every single Home Depot store was compromised in September. The infection was a variant of BlackPOS, the same malware the caused the Target breach. After the breach, there was a spike in PIN debit fraud due to the amount of data that had been leaked, including one customer who had $300,000 stolen in less than 2 hours.

JP Morgan Chase

The enormous data breach at JP Morgan this year impacted 76 million households and 8 million small businesses, and while there has been no evidence of any money being stolen, the news of a breached bank left many shaken and questioning the ability of large businesses to be truly secure.

Community Health Systems

Now facing a class-action lawsuit, Community Health Systems suffered a data breach impacting over 4.5 million patients. While no clinical data was taken in the attack, personal information including social security numbers were stolen–all information covered under HIPAA. Dan Munro of Forbes estimated that in total the breach could cost CHS up to $150 million when it’s all said and done.

Target

While technically occurring in 2013, this list wouldn’t be complete without the most wildly covered data breach in years. Hackers gained access to 40 million payment cards and personal information for 70 million customers. Target suffered a 46% drop in profits in Q4 2013 as a result, and it has been estimated that the breach will cost shareholders $148 million. As of this writing, there have still been no arrests in the case.

Michael’s

In April Michael’s Stores Inc announced two eight-month long data breaches in their stores. Throughout 23 stores, a total of 2.6 million payment cards were compromised. Additionally, the data of 400,000 payment cards was stolen from Aaron Brothers, Michael’s subsidiary.

Neiman Marcus

The high-end retailer was attacked early last year, resulting in the theft of data from 350,000 payment cards. Thousands were confirmed to have been used fraudulently. Executives reported a $68 million loss during the holiday with the breach costing them millions in legal fees.

Here at CardConnect, we’re getting in the holiday spirit—and not just with the tree in the reception area. For the second year in a row, CardConnect is participating in the Adopt a Family program for Cityteam Chester. The Greater Delaware Valley’s branch of Cityteam provides hot meals, shelter, and clothing to the homeless population of Philadelphia year-round. They also provide a recovery program for men with addiction problems, and assist low-income families by providing food and supplies for mothers.

Cityteam Tree

The CardConnect holiday tree, decorated with a tag for every child we will be providing gift for through Cityteam Chester.

Cityteam Chester is a fantastic organization that has been serving the area for over 25 years, and each holiday season the Adopt a Family Program provides gifts to thousands of children in need.

So how does it work? Participants select a child (or children!) they’d like to sponsor, and receive their wish list. Then, they go shopping! Toys get delivered in time for the holidays and volunteers get to spread a little cheer.

CardConnect was made aware of the Adopt a Family Program last year through Chief Architect, Joe Summers. By partnering CardConnect with Cityteam, we were able to provide gifts to 50 children in need, and this year we’ve upped our goal to 60. Joe and his brother then volunteered to deliver the gifts to the families. Joe spoke a bit on the experience of distributing the gifts:

“It warmed our hearts seeing the joy on the faces of the parents when we walked up to their door with gifts. It brought smiles to our faces watching parents usher their kids away so as to not ruin the surprise…It makes me very thankful that programs like Adopt a Family exist and grateful that I have the opportunity to be a part of something so important.”

Joe thought the workplace would be an ideal venue for such a program, and he was right. Not only were we able to team up to help a great deal of families in need, but it brought joy to our office as well.

“I’ve seen employees going shopping as a team, laughter as they chat about what they wanted at that age, competition as they try to out-do each other in classic one-up-man-ship style, all as hidden ancillary benefits.”

Last year, Cityteam volunteers throughout Greater Philadelphia were able to provide toys and clothing for 2,772 children–that’s over 13,000 toys and over 300 bicycles! This year we’re hoping for even more.

Want to get your office involved with Adopt a Family or something similar? Talk to your HR department and volunteer to help raise awareness in the office and gather participants. And don’t forget you don’t have to stick to the holidays! People are in need year-round.

If your city has a local Cityteam chapter, you can also sign up here to volunteer your time.

We’ll leave you with a message from Joe:

“Just as we have all overcome obstacles in our lives, we have all needed help at one point or another. Programs like Adopt a Family offer that help during a time when families and children need it the most. I applaud the employees and management of CardConnect for their continued commitment and encourage others to get involved. You may end up feeling like you get more than you give.”

Ms. Tech

CardConnect was honored to sponsor Women & Venture Capital at the Chicago Venture Summit this October. The event was organized by the wonderful people at Ms. Tech, who work tirelessly to expand awareness of the women in the tech field and connect them with venture capitalists, investors, funding, and provide networking opportunities. They also work to encourage women to become entrepreneurs, leaders, and receivers of venture capital. The fact is, women need better access to the tech field, and organizations like Ms. Tech have made it their mission to bring together like-minded individuals and build a supportive community. In fact, our very own Katya Siddall will be joining Ms. Tech as a council member in 2015!

The Chicago Venture Summit was a one day event that brought in 9900 capital companies from both coasts to educate them on the start-up landscape in the Midwest. Ms. Tech and their vision were a perfect pairing. The Women & Venture Capital event was held at Paris Club Bistro in Chicago and had a fantastic 75 person turnout that brought venture capitalists and female-run startups together for an evening of networking and discussion.

Check out some photos from the event below and read more about Ms. Tech here!

It’s been almost two weeks since the 7th annual Barcamp Philly, and this year CardConnect was honored to be a Luchador-level sponsor. If you’re not familiar, Barcamp is an “unconference”– a day of talks and discussions generated that very day by none other than the attendees themselves. Talks can range from the techy (Dirty Code: How Geek Culture is Breaking Modern IT) to the unexpected (Why Every Girl Should Shave Her Head Once), resulting in a full day of learning, collaborating, and inspiration.

Barcamp is pretty incredible, and we had a fantastic time this year. In an effort to keep the inspiration going we’ve decided to round up some of our favorite tweets from the event.

Barcamp was a full day of learning, inspiring, and meeting some of the brightest folks in Philadelphia. We had an absolute blast and can’t wait to see everyone next year!
